The invention relates to a card reader with a data head, an aperture for the insertion of a card containing data and a drive device for feeding the card into the region of the data head and for moving the card out after the data exchange. The drive device has at least one belt-drive with drive properties which is guided over two rolls arranged at a distance from each other and parallel to the card track, one side of which belt-drive rests on the card upper surface, and the front roll neighbouring the feed-in aperture is rotatably mounted in parts arranged on either side of it. It consists in that the front roll (15, 16) is guided in guides (21) inclined obliquely outwards and upwards against the card track (13). <IMAGE>
