The catalyst regenerator comprises an upper zone wherein catalyst particles are subject to regeneration by a gas stream flowing radially therethrough, and a lower zone wherein the particles are subject to a gas stream flowing upwardly. There being gravity flow of particles from the upper zone to the lower zone, sampling of the catalyst particles to determine their level of regeneration is performed in an annular transistor zone located between the upper zone and the lower zone. The transition zone isolates the upwardly- flowing gas stream from contacting the catalyst particles in the upper zone.
