The process is intended for the partial or total demineralisation or decarbonation of water by means of an ion exchanger and for electrolytical regeneration of the exchanger material. In the regeneration phase, the exchanger material is exposed to an electric field which generates an electrolysis current, the ions released from the exchanger material passing into a flushing water stream. Water is used as the electrolyte and flushing fluid. The regions which receive the exchanger material and the flushing water are separated from one another by a fluid-permeable baffle wall aligned parallel to the direction of flow. In the operating phase, water is passed through the ion exchanger and the flushing water is kept stationary, whereas, in the regeneration phase, water is passed through the flushing water region and the water in the region of the ion exchanger is kept stationary. The electric field applying in the regeneration phase penetrates the ion exchanger region and flushing water region to form a combined electrolysis cell, the field lines passing essentially perpendicularly through the baffle wall.
