[Also in Division F2] A stern tube 3 is surrounded by an oil bath defined by an outer casing 4. Oil is drawn into the stern tube via the opening 8 and the pipe 11 which communicates with a region adjacent the periphery of the casing, and expelled from the tube via opening 9 and pipe 12. The exterior of the casing 4 being in contact with the water 6 is maintained at the same temperature as the water and so oil issuing from pipe 12 is cooled and flows round the bath in the direction indicated by the arrows 14 and 15, and the oil entering pipe 11 is therefore cooler than that adjacent to the bearing assembly. In a modification the inlet pipe 16 is diametrically opposite the discharge pipe 12, and in a further modification the pipe 12 is omitted. |
