Servo position information is recorded conventionnally by data heads (34) independently of the position of a servo head (33) above a servo surface (220). During writing and reading of data, however, the position of the data heads is controlled to permit track following and readjusted on the basis of the servo position information, and thus the range of dynamic and static control of the data heads is unnecessarily restricted. Recording of the servo position information is carried out by means of data heads controlled to permit track following. The data heads so positioned are then transferred to a preassembled magnetic disc store (1) for recording the servo position information of each data track centre predetermined by the servo head in accordance with a constant value (ya) in a radial direction and with variable values (yi) of a transfer matrix (Yht) in the opposite radial direction of the record carrier. The process is used to increase the track density per data surface (221) of the record carrier and hence the storage capacity of the magnetic disc store.
