In a washing and spin-drying machine having a drum 14 rotatable about a horizontal axis within a liquid container 12, the container consists of cast metal e.g. iron of substantially uniform thickness and of sufficient mass to counteract the vibration of the drum unit during washing and spinning. The container 12 has a top with a loading opening 61 and is supported on four shock absorbing legs 16 on the base of casing 10. Drum 14 is driven by a two-speed motor through belt 21 and its pivot pins 23, 24 are carried in bearings 25, 26 cast on the front and rear walls 40, 41 of container 12. In a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, a front loading machine has a cast iron liquid container. |
