Chloropyrimidines are obtained by reacting 3 - methylaminopropionitriles of the formula CH 3 -NR-CH 2 CH 2 -C#N, where R is a hydrogen atom or another radical which is split off under the conditions of the reaction, with excess chlorine at 0-250‹ C. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a chlorination catalyst, e.g. ferric chloride or ultra-violet radiation, and/or in the presence of an inert diluent, e.g. an aliphatic or aromatic chlorinated hydrocarbon. |
