In an hydraulic anti-lock braking system a modulator (23) incorporates a solenoid-operated valve (25) responsive to anti-lock signals, a re-application valve (26) and an expansion chamber (29) to which fluid relieved from the brake (22) in an anti-lock mode. The solenoid-operated valve (25) determines the pressure in a control chamber (84), a poppet valve (94) controls communication between the master cylinder (21) and the brake (22), and a restricted connection (63) is provided between the master cylinder and the output from a re-application pump (28).
