PURPOSE:To obtain the subject composition capable of sizing a paper under a neutral or weakly alkaline paper-making condition by preparing an emulsion containing a succinic anhydride having hydrocarbon substituent and an emulsifier and adding a cation-modified starch to the emulsion. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition is produced by preparing an emulsion containing a succinic anhydride having hydrocarbon substituent [preferably a compound of formula (R is 8-30C alkyl or alkenyl, especially preferably an alkenylsuccinic anhydride having 10-20C alkenyl group] and an emulsifier and adding preferably 20-3,000 pts.wt. (based on 100 pts.wt. of the above acid anhydride) of a cation-modified starch (preferably derived from potato starch or tapioca starch, having a cationized substitution degree of 0.02-0.1 and exhibiting a viscosity of 30-300cps as 1% aqueous solution at 20 deg.C). |
