Prostaglandin intermediates

New optically active intermediates and processes thereto are provided for use in synthesizing therapeutically active prostaglandins of the formula: <IMAGE> XVI wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; from a compound of the formula: <IMAGE> I wherein R1 is as above and R2 is hydrogen or a carboxy blocking group convertible to an acid by hydrolysis.
