PURPOSE:To prevent an abnormal sound and a speed change shock by allowing upshift speed change without stepping-in on an acceleration pedal only under the coasting running condition without engine-brake, and starting the above upshift speed change when the gear ratio has decreased up to a set value, so that the upshift speed change under an engine-braking condition can be avoided. CONSTITUTION:An engine control computer 5 determines a fuel injection pulse width TP, and gives a command to an engine 1. An automatic transmission 2 is provided with a torque-converter 10 and a speed change gear mechanism 11. To control speed change, a speed change control computer 14 and a control valve 15 are provided. The upshift speed change without stepping-in on an acceleration pedal is allowed only under the coasting running condition without engine-brake, and the above upshift speed change is started when the gear ratio has decreased up to a set value. Thus, the upshift speed change under an engine-braking condition can be avoided, so that the occurrence of an abnormal sound and a speed change shock can be prevented.
