A method is specified for connecting two optical fibres which are made of glass and have differing refractive index profiles. The cross-sections of the fibres are in this case tapered off at their ends under the influence of heat and positioned with their end surfaces placed opposite one another. The cross-sections of the fibres are tapered off only to the extent that for the two fibres the ratio of core radius of the tapered-off fibre to the core radius of the fibre which has not been tapered off is larger than 0.5.
