A process for providing an improved cutting blade (1) comprising the operations of depositing in vacuo upon a region of a surface of a blade which it is desired to form into a cutting edge (2) a layer (3) of material capable of forming a compound harder than the material of the blade, and bombarding the deposited material (3) with ions of a second material (6) capable of reacting with the deposited material (3) to form the said compound, the ions of the second material having an energy sufficient to cause at least some ion beam mixing of the hard coating with the material of the blade. |
