An apparatus for covering a window or a door of a building exhibits a roller blind (4) which can be wound up on a reel, mounted in a roller-blind casing (2), and is guided, on each side, in a guide rail (13). The bottom part (15) of each guide rail is arranged such that it can be pivoted out. The end profile (7) provided at the lower end of the roller blind (4) can be connected to the end rail (8) of a fabric (10) wound up on a spring shaft (11). Said end rail (8) and preferably also the longitudinal borders of the fabric (10) are, in this arrangement, guided in the same guide rails (13) as is the end profile (7). The spring shaft (10) is mounted in a roller casing (12) which connects together the two lower ends of the pivot-out parts (15) of the guide rails (13). If said parts (15) of the guide rail are pivoted out and if the end profile (17) is connected to the end rail (8), then, when the roller blind (4) is wound up on the reel (3), the fabric (10) is drawn off the spring shaft (11) and assumes an oblique position with respect to the plane of the window or door; it thus acts as an awning. <IMAGE>
