This invention relates to halogenated derivatives of certain phosphonates having the ability to inhibit aspartate transcarbamylase and therefore are useful in the treatment of certain cancers. These derivatives are the compounds of the formula : <CHEM> or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein Z is NH or CH2, Q is O and when Z is CH2, Q is also (H, OH), X is H, F or Cl and Y is F or Cl, R1 and R2 each are H or C1-6 alkyl, and R3 and R4 each are H or C1-6 alkyl.
