A polymer based packing compound for use in high performance liquid chromatography and related fields, is produced by adding sulfonic acid groups and long chain alkyl groups to a portion of the styrene molecules on a cross-linked polystyrene backbone. Alternatively, the compound can be produced by sulfonating a copolymer of a p-alkyl styrene with styrene and a cross-linking agent. The compound has desireable characteristics for use in reversed phase chromatography in that it is stable over a wide range of pH, retains compounds for a much shorter time than does the sulfonated but un-alkylated cross-linked polystyrene, and does not require the use of ion pair reagents to achieve separation.
