For production of a protective insert (1') for preventing grinding of the teeth, a prefabricated dental arch-shaped moulding (1) with a groove (2) that fits loosely over the teeth and is made of a thermoplastic elastomer, is heated and permanently shaped in the heated state by occluding the teeth and sucking it against the teeth in the mouth and subsequently cooling it. <IMAGE>
