The connector has the optical fibres (1) held by respective cylindrical end sleeves (2, 2'), which in turn are secured by a common centring sleeve (3). The latter has a longitudinal slit (4) and an inner dia prior to the insertion of the end sleeves (2, 2') which is slightly less than the outer dia of the latter. The slit (4) allows expansion of the centring sleeve (3) upon insertion of the end sleeves (2, 2') to provide a clamping force for holding the latter in position. The centring sleeve (3) may be made of a hard metal or a ceramics material. ADVANTAGE - Allows simple manual assembly of connector.
