The breathing appts. for a patient with breathing difficulties is provided with a heat and moisture exchanger. This is fitted between the patient and a Y-piece or non-return valve which is connected to the breathing appts. The heat and moisture exchange element (2) is mounted on a housing (1) with a connection (4) to the patient and a connection (6) to the appts. The element (2) consists of an outer part (15) which is made of woven wire, and an inner part (16) which is made of hygroscopic material. The element (2) is supported at one end on a disc (9) with openings in its outer edge which connect the space (14) around the outer part (15) of the heat and moisture exchange element to the patient.
