Collagen case joining by shaping drying and total dewatering

Collagen case sections for sausages etc. are placed with their end rims overlapped and distorted mechanically in one direction prior to drying, which is followed by complete dewatering. The prior drying should be in hot air which restores the case to natural moisture. Prior to shaping, the material is exposed to alkali and a.c. treatments which increase the difference between the flow and rupture limits of the material. Complete dewatering should be at 110-125 degrees C, and the still moist collagen can be imersed in organic solvents to remote the final moisture. Case section joins are firm, the case material itself improved in strength, and added water can be used to ease its workability if it has become too brittle during treatment.
