When, in an internal combustion engine with an electronic control device for fuel delivery metering, a fault occurs in the control circuit which is nevertheless undetected by the control module and the engine speed exceeds the idling speed and the brake is subsequently operated, the instantaneous engine speed is stored as upper speed limit and retained for a certain period. When this period has elapsed, the engine speed is reduced according to a predetermined function to an emergency operating speed in excess of the idling speed.
