PURPOSE:To maintain a brake torque at a rotational speed of a main shaft in a wide range for a long period of time by controlling the effective value of a resistor to which a current generated in the stator winding of a squirrel- cage induction machine coupled with the main shaft is supplied in response to the voltage and current of the resistor. CONSTITUTION:When a vehicle is braked, an AC power generated in the stator winding of a squirrel-cage polyphase induction machine 2 coupled with an internal combustion engine 1 is supplied through an inverter 4 to a secondary battery circuit 3. An inverter control circuit 5 controls the inverter circuit 4 in response to the vehicle speed signal from a rotation sensor 6. A semiconductor switch 12 supplies part of the output of the inverter circuit 4 to a resistor 11. A switch control circuit 14 controls the effective value of the resistor in response to the current value of the resistor 11 and the voltage of the battery circuit 3.
