A process for treating a new or regenerated catalyst containing a support based on at least one oxide of a metal or of a metalloid and at least one active metal, carried out in the absence of hydrogen and consisting in treating the catalyst with the aid of at least one sulphurising agent employed in solution in a solvent. The invention is characterised in that the sulphurising agent is a polysulphide of general formula: <IMAGE> where R is a linear or branched organic radical containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, R' is an alkyl, alkenyl, arylalkyl or arylalkenyl radical containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, R' optionally containing at least one heteroatom chosen from the group consisting of oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur, x has the value 1 to 4, and y has the value 1 to 8.
