A method and apparatus for withdrawing a casting from an open-ended mold. The apparatus comprises a starter bar connected to a platform movable along platform guides, and a platform propelling mechanism. The apparatus has electrical connections through the starter bar, and it is capable of precise control. The method comprises inserting a starter bar in the mold, starting the casting process, connecting the product to the starter bar, withdrawing the product and severing the product from the starter bar.
