A hydraulic actuating system for motor vehicles, preferably for the actuation of a brake or clutch is proposed, with a master cylinder, in the bore of which at least one actuating piston, preloaded by a return spring, defines at least one pressure chamber, which is connected on the one hand to a pressureless fluid reservoir by way of a compensating chamber and a cup seal and on the other, to a brake or clutch circuit by way of a pressure connection. In order to improve the reliability of the actuating system by feeding fresh gas-free and uncontaminated pressure medium to the pressure chamber for each actuating sequence, it is proposed according to the invention that a bleeder piston (11, 12) acted upon by the return spring (6, 7) be provided in the pressure chamber (8, 9), which piston is provided with a non-return valve (18, 19), and that a second connection (15, 16), which can be shut off when the actuating piston (4) is actuated, be provided between the pressure chamber (8, 9) and the fluid reservoir (2). <IMAGE>
