1287629 Alloying briquettes from scrap MERCER ALLOYS CORP 8 Sept 1969 [13 Sept 1968] 44354/69 Heading C7D Alloy briquettes are produced from machining waste contaminated with abrasives and organic materials by (1) forming an aqueous slurry of the waste, (2) physically releasing the metallic from the non-metallic solids by impaction (e.g. by water washing or treatment in a rod mill), (3) separating the metallic from the non-metallic solids (e.g. in a gravity concentrator), (4) dewatering the slurry to give a dewatered metallic concentrate (e.g. by means of a dewatering screw), (5) optionally adding alloying ingredients, (6) heating the concentrate to dry it and remove organic and volatile substances therefrom (e.g. first under an oxidizing and then a neutral atmosphere) and (7) briquetting the concentrate (with the optional pre-addition of a binder and/or lubricant. The dried concentrate may be magnetically separated prior to compaction. |
