The invention relates to an automatic adjusting device for a disc brake with an extendable adjusting member arranged between the brake piston and the mechanical actuating device and having two adjusting elements connected to one another by a thread free from self-locking, one of the adjusting elements resting against a stop fixed to the housing via a bearing and the other adjusting element being secured against rotation relative to the brake piston, and with a friction clutch for holding fast one adjusting element during mechanical actuation. The object of the invention is to propose a measure which ensures that unwanted adjustment does not occur when the foot brake is actuated with the handbrake applied. The invention proposes, in principle, to mount the other adjusting element so that it cannot rotate relative to the brake piston but is axially displaceable in a resilient manner so that, when the adjusting device is locked by operation of the handbrake, it remains locked even in the event of a relatively large piston stroke because the other adjusting element is held remote from the piston in the axial direction whereas, in the normal condition, when the spring is not compressed, it is held in engagement with the piston. <IMAGE>
