LOW TENSION COOLING OF COMBINED TWISTED/HEAT-SET YARN

PURPOSE: To obtain a ply-twist yarn suitable for a cut pile carpet by doubling and twisting plural crimped continuous filament yarns under specific conditions, heat-setting and cooling the twisted yarns. CONSTITUTION: Plural crimped carpet yarns 1 are passed through feed rolls 2 and a separating guide 3 and then fed to a steam jet block 4 having a cylindrical chamber 20 and capable of heating the ply-twist yarns at an impingement point of steam by the backup of twists imparted to the yarns toward the shaft of the chamber 20 with a steam orifice 21 by a torque jet 7 in the chamber 20. A tube 5 has a larger diameter than 0.35 cm and the aligning of the outlet of the tube 5 with the inlet of the yarn passage in the torque jet 7 is carried out by an aligning means 6. The maximum width of the intersection of the tube 5 with the yarn passage is larger than about 0.076 cm and the yarns are twisted back. The resultant yarn after emerging from takeoff rolls 8 is cooled to afford a ply-twist yarn having >=40 twist reversals/m.
