The rotting drum (10) has a casing (14) which consists of axially parallel thick wooden boards (12) and which is connected positively and non-positively by means of metal clamping hoops (16) to the end plates (20) which consist of trapezoidally cut wooden boards (18). The rotting drum (10) can be charged and emptied discontinuously via a closable casing opening. The thick casing boards have a thermally insulating effect. Moreover, the joints between the individual boards or a forced ventilation and corresponding outgoing-air openings guarantee a gas exchange with the ambient air which is necessary for an aerobic fermentation process. The rotting drum is driven with a very low speed of less than 0.1 to 0.2 rpm so that roll formation in the interior of the drum is avoided.
