PURPOSE:To make an engine brake function effectively by outputting a shift down signal to an automatic transmission when an accelerator off signal and an acceleration signal are inputted. CONSTITUTION:When an accelerator pedal 19 is not stepped on, an accelerator switch 18 is turned on to output an accelerator off signal A. After the signal A is inputted, a car is accelerated, and when a detected car speed is higher than a fixed basic speed read out from a basic speed-speed changing stage map, a shift down signal C is output to one correspondent to the read out speed changing stage of solenoids 17. Thus, only when an engine brake is required, an automatic transmission can be shifted down to make the engine brake function at good timing.
