To produce a thin strip (30) or a thin slab, a continuous-casting installation has a casting drum (1) rotating about a horizontal axis (2) and a distributor (6) which contains a metal melt (8) and can be adjusted towards the surface (4) of the drum, the surface (4) of the drum being supplied with the metal melt (8), which extends over part (25) of its circumference and forms a solidified strand layer (29).
