The invention relates to a control device for welding tongs for electric resistance welding. The flow rate of the fluid moving the welding jaws via hydraulic cylinders is measured by means of a displacement-type flowmeter. The flowmeter is here attached locally separate from the welding tongs in the hydraulic supply unit in order to keep it away from the influence of the magnetic field arising during the welding and to avoid sensitive control lines in the area of the working arm of the industrial robot. Once the volume required for opening the welding tongs has flowed through the flowmeter, it transmits a release signal to the control system of the industrial robot for moving it further.
