To determine the calorific value of the combustible energy-carrying matter, particularly in gaseous form, flowing in a pipe (1), the combustible matter is burnt in a combustion chamber (110) suitable for measuring a small known fraction (qgas) of the mass flow rate (Qgas) of the matter. The air-fuel ratio (f) applying to the combustion in the chamber (110) is measured by means of a measuring circuit (104'). The mass flow rate of the air (qair) used for the combustion in a pipe (103) is measured by means of a measuring device (106). A computer (160) is used to deduce the calorific value (Pu) of the matter flowing in the pipe (1) from the measurements of the mass flow rate of the air (qair) used for the combustion flowing in the pipe (103) and from the measurement of the air-fuel ratio (f). In a variant, the air-fuel ratio (f) may be adjusted using a control circuit (104).

|
