A turning system for a windmill consists of two turning motors 9, 11 which act on the gear rim of the turning bearing. The motors 9, 11 each have, built onto their drive shafts 21, a free-wheel 23 and a electromagnetic friction brake 25. The free-wheels 23 are directed in an opposite manner to one another. A control system operates in a passive state in such a manner that the motors provide torques which are mutually oppositely directed and smaller in relation to the braking moment of the brake 25 of another motor, by means of which damaging play between drive wheel 15 and gear rim 17 is avoided, at the same time as the generator housing 5 of the mill remains at rest. In the active state of the control system, both brakes 25 are uncoupled and both motors exert a greater torque in the same direction. <IMAGE>
