PURPOSE:To obtain a lead storage battery having an excellent life characteristic by providing a layer, which contains a large quantity of a peroxide of lead such as PbO2 or Pb3O4 which is chemically manufactured, near the surface of an unformed pasted positive electrode plate. CONSTITUTION:A plate for a lead sotrage battery is made by applying a paste prepared from lead powder, which is used as an active material, to a supporting member, and then either coating thus obtained member with a paste prepared from chemically manufactured PbO2 or fixing a slurry prepared from chemically manufactured PbO2 on thus obtained member. When such a plate having a relatively inactive PbO2 layer is used, active PbO2 contained in the inner part of the plate preferentially undergoes reaction, and only a small proportion of the surface layer of the plate undergoes reaction. As a result, the size of the active material contained in the surface is not decreased almost entirely, and separation of the active material hardly occurs in the plate. Besides, even if the size of the active material contained in the inner part of the plate becomes very small, separation of the active material is suppressed by the active material contained in the surface layer. In addition, PbO2 which has not undergone any reaction remains in the surface of the plate even after the end of elctric discharge, aiding charging which proceeds from the surface. Here, Pb3O4 may be used instead of PbO2. |
