Gases containing a high percentage of oxygen are injected through nozzles located in a reactor wall and dipping into the melt. Each nozzle consists of two tubes; and a protective cooling fluid is injected through one of the two tubes. The amount of fluid is adjusted, according to the composition of the slag and the temperature difference of the slag from its solidification point, so that a deposit is formed on the nozzles; and the thickness of the deposit does not exceed a desired max. value. The composition and temperature of the slag are adjusted so that slight cooling causes the crystallisation of some compounds in the slag on the nozzle.
