This process for the preparation of acidic zinc baths usable for the removal of bright zinc layers is characterised by the addition to an acidic zinc bath containing sodium benzoate and known dulling agents, preferably benzylideneacetone or methoxybenzaldehyde, a mixture of polyglycol nonylphenol ether with a degree of ethoxylation of 6 to 30, and of polyglycol ether containing fatty alcohol with a degree of ethoxylation of 10 to 26 and containing 9 to 18 carbon atoms, the weight ratio of the ethoxylated polyglycol nonylphenol ether to the polyglycol ether containing ethoxylated fatty alcohol varying between 1.6:1 and 1:1.6.
