A photographic colour developer which is substantially free from bromide and contains at least one primary aromatic amino developer comprises, as an antioxidant, at least one compound corresponding to formulae (I) or (II> <IMAGE> in which R1 and R2 represent hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl, R3 represents C1-C4 alkyl or hydroxymethyl or R1 and R3 together represent the remaining members of a 5- or 6-membered cycloaliphatic ring and n is 0 or 1. The developer is particularly suitable for the development of silver chloride materials of high chloride content and shows adequate stability, even in a two-part formulation. Preferred antioxidants are hydroxyacetone; 1,3- dishydroxyacetone; 3- or 4- hydroxy-2-butanone; 2 hydroxycyclopentanone; 2-hydroxy-cyclohexanone; 2, 4-pentanedione and 2, 4-hexanedione.
