The gripping device of this construction makes it possible to increase the draw-in force, via a spring assembly, in any desired ratio, depending on slopes on the sleeve until a locking effect occurs. To release the clamping device, however, only the spring force of the spring assembly has to be overcome. The increase in the draw-in force is brought about by a plurality of rows of balls which are pushed through a sleeve into the outer rings. The drawing shows a tool gripper with two rows of balls. In order to increase the draw-in path or to retain a small diameter of the structure, further rows of balls can be used for this purpose. The releasing operation may also take place with transmission, using one or more rows of balls. In these embodiments, the balls lie in tracks, and thus always have line contact and remain in an ideal state in the tracks over the whole gripping path.
