A vehicle brake system (2) comprises a brake-actuating part (4), at least one wheel brake unit (6) for braking a wheel (8), and a mechanical connection (10) for connecting the part (4) acting on the brake to the wheel brake unit (6), the mechanical connection (10) comprising a brake cable (12) and a connection-adjusting device (14), wherein the brake cable (12) includes an inner part (16) which rests in axially displaceable fashion in a cable tube (18), the connection-adjusting device (14) including a cable-tube anchoring device (22) which can be displaced from a first position, in which it does not anchor the cable tube (18), into a second position, in which it anchors the cable tube (18), and pretensioning elements (24) for ensuring a tension in the inner part (16) when the cable-tube anchoring device (22) is in the first position, in which it does not anchor the cable tube (18), and the cable-tube anchoring device (22) comprises at least one tooth (26), which engages in projection (28) on the outside of the cable tube (18). <IMAGE>
