A furnace for burning solid fuels, in particular for central heating boilers, has a filling shaft (6) which can be charged with the fuels and passes downwards into a furnace chamber (9) located above a grating (2) and provided with a primary-air supply, which furnace chamber can be adjusted via an adjusting member (18) from upper to lower burning, the furnace chamber (9) being able to be connected, in the case of upper burning, at the top to at least one outlet (14) for the flue and combustion gases and, in the case of lower burning, to a post-combustion chamber (23) which adjoins its lower region, for which a secondary-air supply (21) is provided and which, for its part, is in connection with the outlet or outlets (14). To obtain a simple construction of the furnace while fully utilising the available space and providing a simple cleaning possibility, the adjusting member is designed as a dividing wall (18) which, only in one position, partitions off a post-combustion chamber (23) from the furnace chamber (9) and is mounted so that it can be displaced or folded over preferably until it comes to bear on a fixed shaft wall or removed, freeing the outlet or outlets (14) for the upper burning and enlarging the furnace and filling space, the secondary-air supply (21) being directed into the region (23) which can be partitioned off. <IMAGE>
