PURPOSE:To readily obtain transparent glass, useful as a nonlinear optical element and having crystallites, by adding an organic polysilane, organic polygermane or a copolymer of both to a sol solution prepared by hydrolyzing an alkoxide, gelatinizing the sol and drying the resultant gel. CONSTITUTION:For example, an alkoxide, such as silicon tetraethoxide, is added to an alcohol and diluted. Water is then added to hydrolyze the alkoxide and form a sol solution. A silane, such as 50% dimethylsilane expressed by formula I-50% phenylmethylsilane, 90% dimethylsilane expressed by formula II-10% dimethylsiloxane or octaphenylcyclotetraene expressed by formula III, or (co)polymer of a germane (e.g., solid organic polysilane having an optional molecular weight) or both are added and the resultant mixture is kept at, e.g., 50-60 deg.C, gelatinized and slowly dried to afford the aimed transparent glass. |
