PURPOSE:To obtain the title high-quality substance useful as an octane number improver, etc., in good yield using a relatively inexpensive catalyst, by reacting isobutane with olefins in the presence of sulfuric acid ester of adamantanes and strong acid. CONSTITUTION:Isobutane is reacted with olefins (preferably butenes) at 8-9 molar ratio of the isobutane/olefins in the presence of (A) sulfuric acid ester of adamantanes and (B) a strong acid to afford the title substance. Adamantanes expressed by formula I [Ad is a group expressed by formula II (R1 and R2 are H, 1-10C alkyl, OH, etc.), etc.], formula III, etc., are preferred as the component (A) and produced by dissolving adamantanols, etc., in excess sulfuric acid in 95-99wt.% concentration at about ambient temperature. HF, H2SO4, HSO3F, CF3SO2H, etc., are cited as the component (B). |
