PURPOSE:To obtain the orientation of a uniform monodomain state, stable bistability and a large contrast ratio at the time of driving by using a phthalocyanine compound pigment as the essential component of an oriented membrane. CONSTITUTION:The upper substrate 11 and the lower substrate 21 are opposed and provided, the outer peripheral part is sealed with a seal agent 31 and a ferroelectric liquid crystal 33 is enclosed into the inside, by which a liquid crystal cell 10 is constituted. On the surface of the lower substrate 21, a transparent electrode 23 is provided, and also, an oriented membrane 25 is formed on said electrode, and on the opposed surface of the upper substrate 11, a transparent electrode 13 is provided, and also, an oriented membrane 15 is formed on said electrode. These oriented membranes 15, 25 consist of a phthalocyanine compound pigment, and a liquid crystal molecule is oriented in the horizontal direction against the oriented membrane 15, 25. Accordingly, the liquid crystal can be brought to uniaxial orientation from a uniaxial orientation processing such as a rubbing processing or a diagonal vapor-deposition processing, etc. In such a way, the orienting property of a liquid crystal, especially, the ferroelectric liquid crystal is improved, the orienting property of a uniform monodomain state is shown, and also,a contrast ratio at the time of driving is large, and satisfactory bistability is obtained. |
