A training apparatus is described, having a couch which is inclined at an angle of about 20 to 35@ relative to the horizontal. Arranged on the couch is a longitudinally displaceable seat which is displaceable virtually along the entire length of the couch. Provided above the couch is a stationary gripping device which is at a distance from the upper end of the couch such that a person can lie on the couch below the gripping device and can reach the gripping device with bent elbows. Preferably, the gripping device is arranged about 50cm to about 67cm above the top of the couch, and the gripping surfaces are at approximately the same height or somewhat within the shoulders of the user, it being possible to provide a distance of about 45 to 61cm.
