Process and appliance for milking. The milk is withdrawn through the natural glandula opening (232) of a teat (13) by means of a teat-cup (7) connected to a milk-conveying system which applies a partial vacuum to the teat in order to withdraw the milk through the glandula opening. In order to avoid tissue damage when using this process, the partial vacuum is applied to the teat for a preselectable time interval the length of which is chosen in function of the time available for milking and of the desired frequency of milking. During this time interval, a constant or pulsating partial vacuum can be applied to the teat. The pulse number of the pulsating partial vacuum can vary between 60 and 300 cycles per minute, or the pressure can oscillate between atmospheric pressure and a partial vacuum.
