In order to prevent unintentional release of the pivoting connection in the partially open or closed state of a surgical suturing and cutting instrument which has two branches that can be pivotably connected to one another, a bearing pin being provided on one branch for the releasable pivoting connection of the two branches, whereas the other branch has a V-shaped bearing shell that is open on one side for reception of the bearing pin, without essentially impairing the free releasability of the branches, it is proposed that the branch carrying the bearing pin carry a projection that extends in parallel to the pin with a lateral offset and that the other branch carry an arm that engages over the V-shaped opening on one side and which engages around the projection on the side opposite the bearing shell when the branches are partially or completely pivoted against one another, whereas it releases the projection when the branches are remote from one another, so that the bearing shell can be removed from the bearing pin in the direction of the connection line between projection and bearing pin.
