PURPOSE:To enable the continuous production of the title compound, in high yield, which is used as an intermediate of ampicillin, by separating the cell bodies from the culture mixture, before the concentration of the title compound reaches the level at which the activity of the cell bodies is inhibited, and using them repetitiously in the reaction. CONSTITUTION:At first, a culture mixture of Pseudomonas striata (IFO 12996) and its cell bodies are allowed to act on phenylhydantoin of formula I. Before the concentration of the target compound of formula II reaches the level at which the activity of the cell bodies is inhibited, the reaction mixture is separated into cell bodies and the supernatant containing the compound of formula II, and the cell bodies are used again in the reaction. |
