PURPOSE:To enable stable and high-quality printing at high speed even when high application power is set for a thermal head by providing a means to control an energization period per a single line of thermal head and a means to generate a period for energization suspension during the heating of a single line, in a thermal head drive circuit. CONSTITUTION:An energization pulse generation circuit 4 controls the energization to a thermal head 7 only for a time preset per gradation for expression of density gradation. A suspension time generating circuit 5 controls the suspension of energization to the thermal head 7 only for a time preset per gradation. The above-mentioned two circuits are used alternately or continuously and the energization and its suspension are repeated during the heating period of a single dot on the thermal head. The thermal head 7 is cooled to prevent overheating by providing a plurality of times for energization suspension during a heating period. Consequently, high-speed printing is performed by increasing an application power to the thermal head. Especially, high-quality and sharp- image print can be obtained in a short time by using sublimating dye for a thermal transfer full-color printer. |
