The separator for sorting particulate material into fine and coarse grades coprises a rotor with a vertical axis and vanes. An adjustable guide vane system surrounds the rotor and a housing encasing the guide vane system and the rotor. It has one or more inletducts for the supply of gas and unsorted material. An outlet duct from at least one end of the separator discharges the separated fine grade material suspended in the conveying gas. An outlet duct beneath the rotor and the guide vane system discharges the separated coarse material for further treatment. The guide vane system consists of two or more guide vane sets mounted one above the other being separately adjustable i.e. via pinions (15.16) and axially offset w.r.t. each other at the same radial distance from the rotor axis.
